The mother of designer radioactive elements
This is Irène Joliot-Curie, daughter of Marie Curie and a total badass in her own right. Building on her mother’s work of isolating naturally occurring radioactive elements, she successfully achieved the alchemist’s dream of turning one element into another: creating radioactive nitrogen from boron, radioactive isotopes of phosphorous from aluminum, and silicon from magnesium. She won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 for her pioneering work in induced radioactivity.
